Harlem Academy’s chess team has been gaining momentum – and racking up an impressive collection of trophies and medals along the way. In March, they joined 1,700 other students for six competitive rounds at the New York State Chess Championship in Saratoga. Six members of our team – Ashton '28, Calen '28, Aesyn '29, Greysen '27, Drew '26, and Jamal '27 – placed in the top 10 for their division.
The team also won first place in the u700 section at the Impact Coaching Network (ICN) March Team Tournament, took the top prize again a month later at the April tournament, and celebrated top-20 individual finishes across both events. We are so proud of all the members of the team for their impressive achievements – a culmination of hard work, strategic thinking, and determination.
Chess instruction is woven into the core curriculum for all K-5 students. With the guidance of an ICN chess coach, students first master the basic rules of the game and then move on to more advanced strategies. Our after-school chess club and team – open to all grades – allow dedicated students to deepen their skills and put their abilities to the test at local and statewide competitions.
A special thank you to the Marshall Chess Foundation, the lead sponsor of Harlem Academy’s chess program for the past three years. Their support has allowed us to expand weekly classroom instruction to include kindergarten, double participation in our after-school chess club, and build a competitive chess team that regularly excels at weekend tournaments.
Harlem Academy is an independent school (grades K-8) that drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.
