Stepping Into Leadership

At our Blazer Ceremony, parents, fellow middle schoolers, and staff gathered to watch eighth graders proudly receive their blazers, marking their role as leaders in our community. “At Harlem Academy, a blazer is more than just a piece of clothing; it’s a symbol,” said Khaliah Adams-Joseph, assistant head of school and enrollment director. “It tells everyone watching: I’m ready to lead by action, set the tone for our community, and live by our School Creed and community pillars: initiative, integrity, determination, and compassion.”

A RITE OF PASSAGE

As Harlem Academy’s oldest students, eighth graders guide younger students by example, showing what it means to lead through actions. “I’m excited to take that on. I see it is both a challenge and an opportunity, especially as an older brother,” said eighth grader Zachary. His classmate Jessie agreed, “It represents my responsibility and marks a new chapter in my life.” For Jamie, the moment carried special meaning. “For two years, I watched from the audience. Today, it’s me stepping into this role for our school and community.”

PREPARING FOR HIGH SCHOOL

“The ceremony is a chance to pause intentionally at an important moment in students’ journeys,” shared Head of School Vinny Dotoli. “They are embracing their role as leaders, modeling how to get the most out of each day here at Harlem Academy while also representing our community when they visit prospective schools as they plan for the next stage in their education journeys.” Beyond its symbolism, the blazer is also practical: students often wear it to these visits, to our annual high school fair and, assuming it still fits, when they walk across the stage at graduation.

A MILESTONE

This year’s Blazer Ceremony was particularly special as we celebrated our first double-section of eighth graders, marking the culmination of our five-year strategic plan. “Four years ago, we moved into this building to double our impact. Today, it was wonderful to see our cafe filled with middle schoolers and their families,” reflected Mr. Dotoli. In June, we’ll graduate the largest class in the school’s history – twice as many future leaders ready to make their mark on the world.”
