Opening Day & Our First Full House

Friends, 

Yesterday marked Harlem Academy’s 22nd opening day. It was a start unlike any other, with 212 eager students walking through our doors. That’s twice as many as when we moved to our new home in December 2021 and the full capacity of our current building.

The school’s expansion has always been about opening doors. With more students and more space, we’ve launched critical new programs: interscholastic sports teams, a dynamic physical education curriculum with tennis, fencing, and soccer, introductory Spanish, and vibrant visual and performing arts classes that nurture creativity and confidence.

We see the results in the students’ growth, and we see it in our broader outcomes. This fall, 100% of alumni from the Class of 2021 stepped into their first day of school – at Holy Cross, Howard, Smith, Spelman, Tulane, Union, UPenn, Wesleyan, and more. 

Our mission calls on us to drive equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world. I see that journey beginning as a tentative kindergartner takes their first steps up the stairs and picking up steam as poised eighth graders embark on their final year. These halls are filled with promise, and I have never been prouder to welcome the next generation of leaders into our engaging and joyful classrooms.
