Families often ask what makes our curriculum distinctive as students move into middle school. The answer begins with rigorous academics, but it extends well beyond the classroom. We intentionally create experiences that ask students to collaborate, take risks, solve problems, and become more independent.
Our unique (Re)Explore trip brings that approach to life across New York City. Working in small groups over several weeks, students design their own day-long trip, researching destinations, building an itinerary, managing a budget, navigating public transportation, and adjusting when plans inevitably change.
The (Re)Explore program has also been shared as an innovative model for other educators. Middle Grades Reviewpublished a paper about the initiative, and the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) featured the program as an example of experiential learning that builds leadership, collaboration, communication, and resilience.
(Re)Explore is one of several signature experiences woven throughout our program, alongside multi-day trips to the Delaware Water Gap (which our middle schoolers are on today!) and to Washington, D.C. Together, these experiences offer students meaningful opportunities to step outside their comfort zones and put the skills they develop in the classroom into practice.
Harlem Academy is an independent school (grades K-8) that drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.
