Each summer, Harlem Academy partners with sleepaway camps across the Northeast, opening the door for students to step beyond city life, try new things, build friendships, and discover that they can thrive outside their comfort zones.
For Placement Director Vinya Agbor, summer camp is a natural extension of Harlem Academy's mission. “Camp rounds out what we do here,” she says. “Students return with greater confidence, stronger social skills, and the courage to take on new challenges.” This summer, students are off to camps as far away as northern Vermont and the coast of Maine, with most going for at least three weeks and many returning participants staying for up to seven weeks.
A FIRST SUMMER AWAY
For rising seventh grader Eva, this summer marked her first sleepaway camp experience. She spent three weeks at Camp Kiniya in Vermont, where she paddleboarded, hiked, performed in the camp musical, and challenged herself on a zipline. "I thought I couldn't do it," she says. "But once I got the hang of it, it felt like a breeze."
When the session came to an end, Eva didn't want to leave. Her mother, Lisa, was thrilled to get an enthusiastic report: "It was amazing. It was better than I could have imagined." Then Eva asked, “I'm coming back next year, right?"
LASTING GROWTH
At camp, Eva built friendships with campers from across the United States and Canada. "I thought they weren't going to accept me because they're from different places," Eva says. "But they were very kind."
Back home, Lisa noticed the impact almost immediately. "She's become more accountable and responsible," she says. Lisa encourages other families to embrace the opportunity. "Take that leap," she says. "It's an excellent opportunity for your child to exercise their independence and explore their own interests."
The lessons students gain at camp extend well beyond the summer. They return with greater independence, new confidence, and the knowledge that they can thrive outside their comfort zones. As Vinya puts it, "The world feels bigger than when you left."
We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of our summer partners.
