A New Chapter in Board Leadership

Dear Harlem Academy Community,

As we begin to pursue the ambitious goals outlined in our recently approved strategic plan and look toward our next chapter of growth and impact, our board of trustees is also welcoming new leadership. After 15 years as board chair, David Peterson is passing the gavel to Carol Kenney.

David's leadership has shaped nearly every defining milestone in Harlem Academy's history: the foresight to purchase a half acre of land, the establishment of an endowment, the completion of our first capital campaign, and the construction of our new home. Since then, we have doubled enrollment while preserving the transformational results and close-knit, joyful community that define the school.

David shook hands with Harlem Academy's first graduating eighth graders as they crossed the stage in 2012 and presented diplomas to every member of our first double-section graduating class this spring – a fitting bookend to a remarkable era of leadership that helped make that moment possible. I am thankful that he will continue serving as a trustee as we embark on our next phase.

I am equally excited to welcome Carol Kenney as our new board chair. Carol joined the board in 2021 and quickly emerged as a trusted leader, serving as treasurer, chair of the Finance Committee, and a member of the Development and Education Committees.

Receiving a scholarship to Harvard/Radcliffe transformed Carol's educational journey and deepened her belief in the life-changing power of opportunity. That perspective has fueled her commitment to Harlem Academy and to ensuring that every promising student has the chance to reach their potential.

Please join me in thanking David for his remarkable service and welcoming Carol to her new role.

With gratitude for your continued partnership,

Vinny
