At Harlem Academy, physical education is about more than fitness. It’s a chance to build confidence, teamwork, and perseverance – both on and off the field. Younger students have frequent opportunities for active play, while older students refine their skills through more in-depth training.
Each trimester features instruction and intramural competition in a different sport: tennis, fencing, or soccer. Classes are led by expert coaches through partnerships with organizations like All-City Soccer NYC (highlighted in the NBC story).
This year, we also launched our first two interscholastic teams: cross-country and track. This offered students a chance to engage in friendly competition with other independent schools. As one seventh grader shared in our year-end survey: “Track was something I’d never done before, and I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was great, and it helped to push me to my limit.”
Harlem Academy is an independent school (grades K-8) that drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.
