Welcome Back!

Dear Friends,

It has been wonderful to welcome our students and families back to Harlem Academy and see the building come alive as we begin our 23rd year.

I’m especially grateful for the teaching team. The vast majority of our faculty have returned, bringing the experience, relationships, and deep knowledge of our students that make the program so impactful.

I’m also excited to introduce you to a few new leaders:
  • Drew Krasnavage (Middle School Director): Joins us from St. Bernard’s School, where he served as a fifth grade teacher and developed curriculum and inter-school partnerships.
  • LaShonda Hughes (Student Support and Alumni Director): Returns to HA after first joining us as a teacher when the school had a mere 26 students and going on to hold a range of leadership positions during 18 years of service.
  • Beth Bixenman (Advancement Director): Brings over a decade of fundraising experience at The Notre Dame School of Manhattan to her role.
  • Pablo Barrios (Operations Manager): Brings extensive operational experience from independent schools and local summer camps to his work at HA.
I’m also excited that two members of our community have stepped into new leadership roles. After a great run as middle school director, Will Beller is returning to the classroom full-time and serving as our dean of faculty. And after serving as our operations coordinator, Melissa Hill is stepping up as enrollment manager, building on her successful work with students and families.

What I love most is how everyone on the team is heading into the year deeply committed to a simple but ambitious goal: driving equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.

There will be plenty to share in the weeks ahead. For now, I hope you enjoy this photo album from a wonderful first week. Thank you for your partnership as we launch a new year of learning and growth.

Sincerely,
Vinny
