Harlem Academy's Journey

  • 2004

    Opened with 12 first graders at Children’s Arts Carnival and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

  • 2005

    Moved to 1330 Fifth Avenue with a first and second grade

  • 2005

    Held our first weekly community meeting, with traditions that continue to anchor our school culture to this day

  • 2009

    Added sixth grade, and officially launch our middle school

  • 2009

    Inaugural middle school trip to the Princeton-Blairstown Center for three days of wilderness and team-building challenges

  • 2010

    Adopted our School Creed, highlighting habits for lifelong learning and community contribution

  • 2011

    Earned early NYSAIS accreditation based on the strength of the school’s program

  • 2011

    Recognized with the New York Times Nonprofit Excellence Award.

  • 2012

    First eighth-grade graduation

  • 2015

    Our Shakespeare troupe won first place prize at a citywide competition, the first of three straight victories for this signature program.

  • 2016

    First eighth grade trip to D.C. and meeting with civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis

  • 2018

    New high-water mark for sharing best practices, with the publication of five papers in education journals

  • 2020

    First alumni graduated from college, including Harlem Academy’s current middle school science teacher

  • 2020

    Broke ground on 30,000-square-foot building

  • 2021

    Moved into our new campus at 655 St. Nicholas Avenue

  • 2022

    Welcomed first kindergarten class to fulfill our vision for aligning admissions with natural NYC entry points

  • 2023

    Added a second section of sixth grade to begin doubling our middle school

  • 2024

    Continued expanding our middle division and introduced Spanish, afternoon STEM enrichment, expanded arts, and interscholastic track and cross-country teams.
