Middle School and Graduate Counselor (Immediate Opening)

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the middle school director, the middle school and graduate counselor serves as a key bridge, uniquely positioned to help students develop skills for a strong transition into secondary school and then supporting them in tapping that toolkit to navigate new environments, organize their time, develop as leaders, take advantage of new opportunities, find peers and mentors, and pursue a joyful and fulfilling path.

Middle School Counseling (40% time)

Work with students in individual, small group, and classroom settings to develop critical skills for success in the middle school program and the transition to secondary school.
Provide short-term counseling for students and families navigating difficult situations.
Serve as a liaison between the school community and external support systems through referrals and ongoing communication with outside professionals.
Maintain communications appropriate to ethical and professional standards.
Collaborate in support of overall program operation and positive school culture.

Secondary School Placement (40% time)

Coordinate and support the completion of key steps in the placement process, including interview prep, test prep, applications, and essays, as well as the submission of school reports, recommendations, and transcripts.

Graduate Counseling (20% time):

Maintain a schedule for targeted individual and class communication, offering mentorship and problem-solving as needed.
Help graduates receive college-access programming (test prep, essay writing, etc.).
Coordinate special events, volunteering at HA, and internship opportunities.
Track data to guide individualized support and broader programming.

Skills and Qualifications:

Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or related field.
Proven counseling experience, with time in school setting and/or college advising a plus.
Strong organization and communication skills.
Ability to juggle multiple deadline-driven priorities and track key tasks over time.

Compensation:
Harlem Academy offers a challenging and supportive work environment, leadership and professional growth opportunities, health benefits, and a salary scaled to experience and demonstrated skill starting at $46,000.
