Dear HA Community,  I hope you had a chance to read the email from Ms. Feliz over the weekend about steps we need to take related to the novel coronavirus and the flu in general; those practices are reposted at the bottom of this email for your review. In addition, we are going to make a switch for the time being to greeting each other with warm words and eye contact but without hugs or hand shakes.  I know this is hard because of our values and the way we connect with each other, but it' Read more...

Dear HA Families, Our school, much like our City, was quiet today after what was a challenging but strong week: School attendance was 90%, which was a perfect demonstration of your commitment to learning and respect for the prevention measures we were taking. Teachers were amazing in modelling our school creed and driving a joyful, productive school culture. Students were NOT shaking hands but were otherwise striving for academic growth and contributing in alignment with our four Read more...

Dear Families, I can't believe we are almost 3 weeks into our distance learning program.  It's not the trimester any of us would have imagined, but I am so proud of the way our students, teachers, parents, and support team have come together to continue realizing our mission to drive equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.   It certainly is a world that will continue to need an influx of Read more...

Dear HA Families,   First, thank you for your participation in our family meetings this week. I appreciated your warmth, your encouragement, your suggestions, and also your willingness to share your vulnerabilities in these challenging times.   Thanks also to everyone who filled out the distance learning survey this week. If you haven't had a chance to respond, please do so now (it only takes 5 minutes) or definitely sometime before we close collection at 5 p.m today.    I’ve already Read more...

Dear Families,   First off, I appreciate the way everyone is continuing to practice good flu prevention measures and listening to facts over responding to fear related to the novel coronavirus.   We are teaching a couple of habits on which we could use your help with reminders and emphasis at home:   Greetings: Instead of handshakes and hugs, we are greeting each other with a kind word, eye contact, and maybe an elbow touch (but no contact more than that). Hand washing: We have Read more...

Dear HA Families,   First off, thanks to all of you, as well as to all of our students and teachers, for ongoing partnership as we work through the challenges and uncertainties related to the novel coronavirus.   Everyone is doing a great job of staying vigilant in our prevention habits, responding to facts instead of fears, and attending to the children's academic and holistic needs.   We have no plans to close the school at this time but want to be prepared for our students’ learning Read more...

Harlem Academy's guiding principles are a written articulation of the values that have helped the school to achieve its strong results to date and will help us to become even stronger going forward. These principles are posted throughout the school and infused into every aspect of our work. Model: We live the school pillars and creed knowing that we create a powerful lever for change when we model the habits we seek to develop in our students and commit to working with common purpose toward Read more...
Dear Families,   What an unusual weekend. My church was about half-filled on Sunday. Folks were definitely trying their best to live a facts-over-fear lifestyle, but it's not easy. Of course, we were doing all the head things: washing hands w/ soap for 20 seconds, staying home if sick, not touching face (which is very hard), avoiding dense crowds as able, and more washing hands with soap for 20 seconds!   However, it's the heart things that seem tougher. The church service just didn't Read more...

Dear Families,   Given the continued evolution of the novel coronavirus and the need to plan for a variety of potential responses in the future, Harlem Academy will be closed for students tomorrow (Friday, March 13). Please note - this decision is not based on any information specific to the HA community but based on facts from around the city and more broadly. On a side note and unfortunately, this also means that our planned skating party (so kindly set up by Ms. Aponte, fifth grade Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I hope you are finding some measure of sanity and joy as we navigate these extraordinary days. Before writing, I wanted to have some time to review plans with the admin team and also had to mix my work time with helping lead the first day of "home school" for my own kids here in Washington Heights, so my apologies that it took a bit longer than expected to send this message. Nevertheless, I think we are in as good a place as possible given the circumstances.   First Read more...
