Chess sharpens thinking and strategy skills in ways that apply to many areas of life. At Harlem Academy, our vision is for students to be among the top players in the city and to compete in local, regional, and national championships.
Unlike many schools where chess programs cost well over $1,000 per child, Harlem Academy includes K-5 classroom instruction, an after-school club, and weekend tournament registration in tuition for families willing to commit.
Participation on the chess team is only possible with parent involvement in supporting club attendance, weekend tournaments, and independent practice on ChessKid.
In the fall, our interscholastic cross-country team competes against other independent schools in a series of meets at the historic Van Cortlandt Park course. In the spring, our interscholastic track team competes in a variety of events, including sprints, distance runs, hurdles, shot put, and long jump.
Harlem Academy is an independent school (grades K-8) that drives equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.
