What's on Our Students' Summer Reading Lists?

School may be out, but that hasn’t stopped our students from curling up with a good book. Reading is a part of each student’s summer education plan – an approach designed to prevent “summer slide” and keep academic skills sharp.

We asked some of our middle schoolers what books they’re enjoying right now and why they believe summer reading is so important. 

Rabi, 6th grade
Currently reading: “Amari and the Night Brothers” by B.B. Alston
“My favorite character is Quinton because he’s very smart and he uses that to help his family.” 
On summer reading: “It’s good to read over the summer because it keeps you occupied in a positive way and helps you learn new words.”

Kadin, 7th grade
Currently reading: “A List of Cages” by Robin Roe
“It’s a very enjoyable book because the conflicts are thrilling. The main character is experiencing two similar problems in both his school and personal life. My favorite character is Adam because even though he’s popular, he is kindhearted and cares for the main character, Julian.”

Mariah, 8th grade
Currently reading: “Night” by Elie Wiesel
“This book has made me more aware of the events of World War II because it’s from the perspective of a Jewish person during the Holocaust.” 
On summer reading: “It’s great for children to read during the summer. It strengthens your mind and helps build reading comprehension skills. You’ll go back to school more prepared – especially if you’re entering middle school.”

Mateo, 6th grade
Currently reading: “The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora” by Pablo Cartaya
“Arturo is my favorite character because his creativity and sense of humor remind me of me. Although the book is fiction, Arturo’s life is relatable to everyday life – with twists of drama and comedy. I’m excited to see how it concludes.”

Chagus, 8th grade
Currently reading: “Manga Shakespeare: Julius Caesar” adapted by Richard Appignanesi
“I’m about 20 pages in so far, and I’m excited to read it.” 
On summer reading: “Reading books in the summer keeps your mind sharp when you’re not in school.”
