While we can thankfully report that there have been no known cases of COVID-19 among our students and teachers so far this fall, there has been a sharp rise in cases throughout NYC. As such and in keeping with our policies, we are switching to an all-remote learning model starting this Monday, November 16.
For Families Switching to Remote Learning: We are very sorry for the additional burden. It is likely that all NYC schools will switch to all-remote sometime early next week, but we have decided to make that shift official now, so affected families have time to plan. We will stay in the all-remote model through at least the end of Thanksgiving break and will monitor for safe opportunities to restart the in-person option after that time. Also, Ms. Baber will serve (along with your child's teacher) as a point person to support as smooth and effective a transition as possible; please check-in with her if you have individual questions or concerns about how to make things work best. Also, since tomorrow (Friday) is the last day of in-person learning for a while, we will send attending students home with their current books and supplies.
For All Families: The remote learning model will stay largely the same. One of our original reasons for choosing this model was to provide consistency and routine for our students through what we knew was going to be a year with lots of challenge and volatility. It was helpful to get good feedback from parents about what is working well in our model and what can improve. Overall, we have 93% of families rating the fall program as strong to very strong. There is appreciation for the engaging live instruction, individual check-ins, differentiated independent work, and overall communication. At the same time, we definitely heard good information about areas to grow, including wanting better communication about missing work or other performance issues across all grades. Ms. Davis and I will work with the teaching and administrative team to incorporate all of the feedback as we move forward.
We are planning to open the school for limited hours each week (including next Thursday (11/18) and Friday (11/19)) so families can drop off and pick up books, computers, and other essential items. Ms. Feliz and Ms. Garcia will lead this effort and will follow-up with more detailed information in the coming days to aid in your planning.
Thank you as always for your partnership as we navigate these challenges and work together to meet our mission and students' needs.
