The vision for character education at Harlem Academy is expressed in our School Creed and four community pillars: initiative, integrity, compassion, and determination. We plan thoughtful lessons around each of these concepts, serving as examples and reminders of who we, as a Harlem Academy community, strive to be.
We seek opportunities to build relationships with one another in an environment in which all individuals are valued and respected. We use the Connected and Respected curriculum to advance students’ social and emotional development, with a focus on collaboration and problem solving. The program helps students understand similarities and differences, active listening, critical thinking, empathy, managing anger, and deescalating conflict.
Every lower school student has a journal and writes a weekly reflection on what excited them most during the week, something they have learned, and an area in which they would like to improve.
