A Letter From The Head Of School

A Letter From The Head Of School

Tuesday, March 24, 2020

I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy.

Given the current circumstances, Harlem Academy has no choice but to cancel our critically important Spring Benefit, which covers 25% of annual expenses. To fill this funding gap, I am writing to ask you to contribute to an urgent $1.3 million campaign: Make Your Mark.

Over the past 16 years, I have been inspired not only by the resilience of our community but also by its generosity. Today, I am asking for your help because the families most impacted by economic uncertainty cannot afford to have their children’s education become a victim of circumstance.

Our teachers have been working tirelessly to adapt our program so that distance learning can begin after spring break with the same focus on individualized instruction and character development as when we meet in person. Some immediate changes include:

  • Adjusting our curriculum so that classes can be taught online.
  • Providing laptops to any family that lacks funds for home technology.
  • Reaching out to ensure all families have food, child care, and mental health services
  • Adjusting tuition for any families affected by job losses and income reduction.

When our students face adversity, we teach them to rely on the school’s pillars: initiative, integrity, determination, and compassion. Today, I am asking the rest of our community to meet this moment in much the same way.

If you have ever been inspired by the firm handshake of one of our first graders or the journey of one of our outstanding graduates, please go to our Make Your Mark campaign website and contribute whatever you can. Your generosity is more important than ever.

I look forward to staying in touch.

With best wishes always,

Vincent A. Dotoli
Head of School
