Dear Families,   What an unusual weekend. My church was about half-filled on Sunday. Folks were definitely trying their best to live a facts-over-fear lifestyle, but it's not easy. Of course, we were doing all the head things: washing hands w/ soap for 20 seconds, staying home if sick, not touching face (which is very hard), avoiding dense crowds as able, and more washing hands with soap for 20 seconds!   However, it's the heart things that seem tougher. The church service just didn't Read more...

Dear Families,   Given the continued evolution of the novel coronavirus and the need to plan for a variety of potential responses in the future, Harlem Academy will be closed for students tomorrow (Friday, March 13). Please note - this decision is not based on any information specific to the HA community but based on facts from around the city and more broadly. On a side note and unfortunately, this also means that our planned skating party (so kindly set up by Ms. Aponte, fifth grade Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I hope you are finding some measure of sanity and joy as we navigate these extraordinary days. Before writing, I wanted to have some time to review plans with the admin team and also had to mix my work time with helping lead the first day of "home school" for my own kids here in Washington Heights, so my apologies that it took a bit longer than expected to send this message. Nevertheless, I think we are in as good a place as possible given the circumstances.   First Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I hope this email finds you and your family healthy. With all the stress that both adults and children are feeling during these unprecedented times, I asked Emma Baber, our counselor, to share a few pointers:   Talk to Your Kids and Answer their Questions - Children typically worry about what's unknown; having information helps them feel safe. Speak to your kids in age appropriate ways, and encourage them to talk about their thoughts and worries. Answer their Read more...

Dear Families,   I hope all of you are staying safe and healthy, even finding some moments of joy during this challenging time.    Thanks to everyone for partnering in what appears to have been a mostly successful first week of distance learning. I am really proud of the way teachers and parents are coming together to ensure that our kids get live instruction, independent practice on IXL and other apps, plus lots of reading and writing (just like we always prioritize at HA). I also love Read more...

With the closure of NYC Public Schools, Harlem Academy launched its remote-learning program on April 2 when school resumed after spring break. While nothing can replace coming to Harlem Academy in person, our distance-learning program taps into the strong relationships that make our school so special. We've woven in lots of check-ins and office hours with teachers, advisors, administrators, and our school counselor. And we've set up times to gather and connect informally for chess, athletics Read more...

Dear HA Community,  I hope you had a chance to read the email from Ms. Feliz over the weekend about steps we need to take related to the novel coronavirus and the flu in general; those practices are reposted at the bottom of this email for your review. In addition, we are going to make a switch for the time being to greeting each other with warm words and eye contact but without hugs or hand shakes.  I know this is hard because of our values and the way we connect with each other, but it' Read more...

Dear HA Families, Our school, much like our City, was quiet today after what was a challenging but strong week: School attendance was 90%, which was a perfect demonstration of your commitment to learning and respect for the prevention measures we were taking. Teachers were amazing in modelling our school creed and driving a joyful, productive school culture. Students were NOT shaking hands but were otherwise striving for academic growth and contributing in alignment with our four Read more...

Dear Families, I can't believe we are almost 3 weeks into our distance learning program.  It's not the trimester any of us would have imagined, but I am so proud of the way our students, teachers, parents, and support team have come together to continue realizing our mission to drive equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.   It certainly is a world that will continue to need an influx of Read more...

Dear HA Families,   First, thank you for your participation in our family meetings this week. I appreciated your warmth, your encouragement, your suggestions, and also your willingness to share your vulnerabilities in these challenging times.   Thanks also to everyone who filled out the distance learning survey this week. If you haven't had a chance to respond, please do so now (it only takes 5 minutes) or definitely sometime before we close collection at 5 p.m today.    I’ve already Read more...
