Community Outreach

Harlem Academy was founded in 2004 with a mission to drive equity of opportunity for promising students. What began as 12 children in a church basement is now 120 students in first through eighth grade. Over the past 16 years, we have developed a program that cultivates academic excellence in an area where promising children are often overlooked. Today, Harlem Academy graduates are making their mark at our nation’s top secondary schools, including Andover, Spence, and Trinity, and at leading universities, including Brown, Cornell, and Dartmouth.

The next step in our evolution is a permanent campus. Architectural firm Perkins Eastman has worked closely with our board and owner’s representative (Lehrer-Cumming) to design a 29,000 square-foot, five-story building to anchor the campus. It will feature a library to match our extraordinary reading culture, labs for creative and disciplined work in math and science, a multipurpose community space, and dedicated outdoor spaces for learning, play, and sports. We are on track to break ground in June 2020 and move in July 2021.

This move will allow us to nearly double our impact to 216 students, add a kindergarten class, expand to a second section for sixth through eighth grade, and graduate 32 students each year. Most importantly, the campus will ensure a lasting pathway to opportunity for generations of leaders to come.
