Capital Campaign Launch

Capital Campaign Launch

Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Dear Friends:

I am pleased to announce the launch of Future Leaders: The Capital Campaign for Harlem Academy, a $30 million campaign to fund construction of a permanent campus in Central Harlem.

In 2004, this school was just the seed of an idea. With your help, what began as 12 children in a church basement is now 125 students in first through eighth grade.

Today, Harlem Academy is recognized nationally for its best practices. Our students show tremendous growth, with graduates moving on to top secondary schools, including Andover, Chapin, Horace Mann, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Miss Porter’s, Nightingale, Peddie, Riverdale, Spence, and Trinity. Our first few alumni classes are already making their mark at some of our nation’s best colleges and universities, including Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Fordham, Lehigh, NYU, and RPI.

The next stage in the school’s evolution is a permanent campus. Our new facility will allow Harlem Academy to double in size, expanding our impact to 240 students. We will be able to add a kindergarten, allowing for earlier social and academic skill development. A second section for sixth through eighth grade will offer broader social and academic opportunities for our middle schoolers.

Our new campus will be a space that strengthens our sense of community, inspires bold creativity, encourages balance between hard work and play, and cultivates our best work. This is at the heart of Future Leaders: The Capital Campaign for Harlem Academy

We have raised $22 million to date and purchased a half-acre lot at 655 St. Nicholas Avenue. The site is convenient to public transportation, historic landmarks, parks, Columbia University, and City College. We plan to break ground in May 2020 and complete construction in August 2021.

Please visit our new capital campaign webpage and reach out to Terry Frankenberger, our chief development officer, at tfrankenberger@harlemacademy.org or 212-348-2600, ext. 306 to discuss the campaign and how you can help bring it to completion.

Now, as we celebrate 15 years, we are embarking on a new leg of our journey. Together, we will secure the legacy of our school and ensure a lasting pathway for the next generation of future leaders.

Sincerely,

Vincent A. Dotoli
Head of School
