Dear HA Families, First off, thanks to the 37 families who jumped in for our Zoom call today and to the 60 families who have already filled out our Fall Learning Survey.  My kids' public school in Washington Heights has over 700 students, and they still aren't getting that level of engagement! For everyone, I want to emphasize a couple of points that came up from our discussion about our fall program: All HA teachers will be providing online instruction for all students; this includes Read more...

With the closure of NYC Public Schools, Harlem Academy launched its remote-learning program on April 2 when school resumed after spring break. While nothing can replace coming to Harlem Academy in person, our distance-learning program taps into the strong relationships that make our school so special. We've woven in lots of check-ins and office hours with teachers, advisors, administrators, and our school counselor. And we've set up times to gather and connect informally for chess, athletics Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I want to start by saying how proud I am of our teachers, students, and parents for all your resilience, collaboration, hard work, and achievement through the winter trimester.  Essays, poetry, great books, math competitions, science experiments, mindfulness practices, and engaged participation in classes every day... it's really just amazing!   We have to remain vigilant in our pandemic response and will continue with our remote program with most students learning Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I hope your family enjoyed a safe, happy holiday season and a successful return to classes. Given the current COVID-19 rates, Harlem Academy will continue fully remote learning for the time being.  We are looking for a 7-day positivity rate to be consistently close to or under 4% citywide and no significant spikes in rates in the neighborhoods near school and from where most of our students and staff travel.  As of January 3, the citywide rate had climbed to 6.7%, Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I hope you had a safe, happy Thanksgiving.     Harlem Academy will stay with a fully-remote program until at least January 11. COVID positivity rates continue to be high in the neighborhoods where our students and teachers reside, and we are worried about additional exposure during the holidays.     We hope that a week of fully remote programming in January will allow for any needed post-holiday quarantining and testing so that anyone who wants to learn from school Read more...

Dear Families,   While we can thankfully report that there have been no known cases of COVID-19 among our students and teachers so far this fall, there has been a sharp rise in cases throughout NYC.  As such and in keeping with our policies, we are switching to an all-remote learning model starting this Monday, November 16.     For Families Switching to Remote Learning: We are very sorry for the additional burden.  It is likely that all NYC schools will switch to all-remote sometime Read more...

Dear HA Families,   I hope you are safe and well as we continue to grapple with this fall's challenges.   The teachers and entire team at Harlem Academy are committed to 1) partnering with you, 2) delivering a challenging and engaging program, and 3) ensuring that nothing gets in the way of meeting our mission - to drive equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.   So the question today is - Read more...

Dear Families,   First off, I appreciate the way everyone is continuing to practice good flu prevention measures and listening to facts over responding to fear related to the novel coronavirus.   We are teaching a couple of habits on which we could use your help with reminders and emphasis at home:   Greetings: Instead of handshakes and hugs, we are greeting each other with a kind word, eye contact, and maybe an elbow touch (but no contact more than that). Hand washing: We have Read more...
