April 16, 2020 message from Mr. Dotoli

Dear Families,

I can't believe we are almost 3 weeks into our distance learning program.  It's not the trimester any of us would have imagined, but I am so proud of the way our students, teachers, parents, and support team have come together to continue realizing our mission to drive equity of opportunity for promising students, guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world.

It certainly is a world that will continue to need an influx of outstanding doctors, nurses, teachers, political and nonprofit leaders, writers, architects, engineers, and entrepreneurs.  Our alums are thriving at secondary school and universities in ways that are already having an impact and will continue into the future.

The Class of 2016 has been sharing news of their college placements, including:  American, Carnegie Mellon, Drexel, George Washington, Princeton, Stonehill, SUNY Purchase, Tufts, UNLV, Wesleyan, and Yale.  Besides this being a great list of schools to share, almost every one of the alums earned full or partial scholarships to go with their acceptances and many of the parents wrote to express the connectivity between these college admissions and the work we are doing together at HA.

Here are just a couple of alumni parent notes from the last week:

  • HA prepared him for what was to come very well. HA gave him a great foundation and it really helped him become the person he is today.  Thank you so much for everything and keep pushing these kids to success :))
  • Many schools say things to attract parents and students, but it is my testimony that HA follows through on those attractions that parents are looking for. HA has definitely challenged my daughter and myself to step out of our comfort zone, and it's made a huge difference.

So if (like me) you are feeling up and down from the challenges of these days, I hope these results serve as a reminder of how the little things we are all doing can lead to some terrific results down the road!

To that end, I am hoping to connect and get your feedback about our work together twice in the coming days:

  • LaShonda and I are going to host the parents of each class for a video conference one morning next week.  Ms. Garcia will send an invite for your class's meeting by tomorrow morning.  I have loved seeing the way students and teachers are connecting for rigorous, intellectually engaging instruction via video conference, and it will be great to connect with you next week in a similar format.
  • Please take 5 minutes (right now if possible or at latest by Monday) to let us know what is working and could improve about our distance learning program by completing this short survey:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/P7S3HRR

You probably heard that DOE schools are in distance learning through the end of the year, which will mean that HA will do the same.  We will have more information to follow about graduation and other aspects of our spring, but getting your feedback on how to run the program well for the rest of the spring is really important.

Again, thanks very much for ongoing partnership in the realization of our mission for your children and all the members of our community.

Have a good evening.
