Harlem Academy’s lead teachers must possess outstanding skills for maximizing learning and a resolve to do whatever it takes to help build a school in Harlem that rivals the best private schools in New York City. Qualified applicants must have 3+ years of experience and must demonstrate:
  • A steadfast commitment to the school’s mission.
  • Foundational skills for academic instruction and general student supervision.
  • A record for maintaining a professional work ethic including timeliness, attendance, communication, decision-making, follow-through, and adherence to school policies.
  • Strong planning, organization, and written and oral communication skills.
  • An ability to reflect upon practices and work in improve as an educator.
  • Professional conduct and a thoughtful, team-oriented approach.
A relevant master’s degree is preferred but not required based on demonstrated skills.  
  • Teach multiple core courses in a lower school grade or a subject-specific sixth through eighth-grade core curriculum. 
  • Write and execute engaging, culturally relevant, and developmentally appropriate lesson plans that challenge students to meet learning goals.
  • Use evaluation and data-driven understanding of your students to drive teaching decisions.
  • Manage school-day routines and environments to ensure safety, academic performance, and holistic growth.
  • Build genuine relationships with families through formal and informal written correspondence, meetings, volunteer opportunities, and overall collaboration toward our students’ growth.
  • Advise students, lead electives, and contribute holistically to our culture and mission.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and a thoughtful, team-oriented approach.
  • Reflect on and improve professional practices with mission-focus, depth, and honesty.
