As a volunteer with the second grade writing project, I get to spend time with some of the brightest and most imaginative students I’ve ever met.

Each lower school class and middle school advisory group completes at least one annual service project. For example, grade-one students work with the residents of a local elder care facility, sharing activities and performing for them. Our students have planted trees for Earth Day and have worked with Central Park rangers to help clean the park. As students learn about current events and global issues, they take initiative to support those in need. Harlem Academy supported a sister school in Haiti after the earthquake with a donation and a writing collaboration. Students have also sponsored drives for clothing, food, and holiday gifts, for both members of the local community and for people living in Africa and Asia. Each holiday season, the school trims a “giving tree.” In a season during which most children are focused on what they might get, Harlem Academy students focus on the needs of others.
