Admissions

“There was an active interest in what kind of education I wished for my child. I felt that I was really being listened to.”

“Welcoming,” “warm and friendly,” and “well-organized” are among the phrases repeated by parents in describing Harlem Academy’s admissions process. When asked what stood out, parents universally said the enrollment director got to know their family and helped to guide them through the process. Parents also appreciated the information sessions, particularly the opportunity to hear from other parents and learn about the school prior to applying.

First Year

“The school’s open-door policy made us feel very welcomed. The fact that there's someone from Harlem Academy at the front door every morning waiting to greet every family as they come in shows us that they really care.”

In thinking back to their first year at Harlem Academy, many parents pointed to the meet-and-greet as an opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to get to know one another before school started. Parents also valued unfettered access to teachers and administrators.

Communication

“Instead of writing just a brief comment (for report cards), the teacher writes a very detailed summary regarding your child. This indicates the level of thought and consideration the school has given to my child’s needs. Documenting their observations in this way requires greater effort, but it helps us to better assess his progress.”

Parents expressed appreciation for the wide range of communication methods offered, including email from teachers, the website for general and class-specific information, and Facebook to stay up-to-date on events and activities.

Program

"What stands out the most is what an excellent job the teachers have done preparing my child for the next level of learning and how much he has matured."

Families cited a wide range of program components that stand out, including family partnership, character development programming (e.g. community meetings, Saturday Club, and the advisory program), rigorous academics, and the extended day. Families also mentioned that Harlem Academy’s teachers love teaching, emphasize critical thinking, and provide personal attention within small classes.

School Values

"The school creed is posted on my refrigerator, and I have my son read it to me daily."

Parents believe that the school is teaching strong values and support these values by responding to concerns raised by teachers, being involved at the school, and modeling good behavior.
