Extended Day

Harlem Academy offers programming from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.  Extended hours give students more time to focus on the school's extensive goals for learning and overall development. The extended-day program is designed to provide ample opportunity for teachers and parents to meet and discuss each child’s progress. Every student uses the extended-day program at no extra cost to the family.

The after-school program offers time for homework support, extra help in math and reading, and access to Harlem Academy’s full-time teachers. Students from top secondary schools provide additional support as tutors.  Beyond academic help, tutors offer an authentic window into high school life and academics, inspiring students to strive for success. By making school fun during after-school hours, Harlem Academy helps to instill a life-long love of learning.

Research validates the effectiveness of extended day programming in bolstering student achievement. A review of 35 studies showed a significant improvement in test scores in reading and mathematics after students participated in after-school programs.  After-school programs are also correlated with better attendance, decreased failure rates, and increased participation (The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning).

An estimated seven million children in the U.S. are without adult supervision for some amount of time after school, with juvenile violence peaking between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on school days (U.S. Department of Justice).  After-school programs provide a critical service to working families, particularly those from underserved, urban areas. At Harlem Academy, families know their children are safe and supported until after work hours, when supervision is available at home.
