Grade Seven

Students explore political philosophy in grade seven. Students study Enlightenment thinkers such as Mill, Locke, Hobbes, and Rousseau to better understand the impact their theories had on the formation of the American republic. They then move into an exploration of the underpinnings of American slavery, reading primary source documents and slave narratives and examining the political decisions that sustained slavery for such a long period. A media studies and journalism unit examines advertising and photography, and students learn how to craft a successful editorial. Finally, grade-seven students sharpen their persuasive writing and speaking through a study of formal rhetoric, logical fallacies, and how to develop counterarguments.
