Grade Eight

In grade eight, students learn to write numbers in standard form and to formulate the algebraic expression for the general term of a number sequence. Students continue work on volume and surface area, focusing on spheres, pyramids, and cones, and learn to find arc length and sector area. Grade-eight students factorize algebraic expressions and solve simultaneous linear equations, simple fractional equations, and quadratic equations. Students graph linear and quadratic functions and interpret and draw graphs in practical situations. Students also explore reflection, rotation, translation, and enlargement of simple planes; similar and congruent figures; angle properties of polygons; scale drawings; and symmetry. Students are introduced to trigonometry with a study of the Pythagorean Theorem and an introduction to trigonometric ratios.
