Writing

Throughout the lower school grades, Harlem Academy students hone their writing skills by focusing on four areas: the writing process, strategies for clear and engaging writing, genres of writing, and conventions for properly presenting writing:

  • Process. As students learn about the writing process, they begin to set and achieve goals and develop stamina for strong, enthusiastic writing. The writing process helps students follow the rules, routines, and expectations of writing lessons and make the most of their individual time with teachers.
  • Strategy. Our lessons on writing strategy focus on how to create engaging and clear texts. Students learn to enhance writing by adding meaningful dialogue, feelings, and details. By grade four, students are equipped to structure organized, multi-paragraph essays using simple, effective transitions. When presenting their opinions, students are expected to write in clear paragraphs, supporting their ideas with researched facts and details.
  • Genre. Our genre lessons explore narrative stories, nonfiction works, and poetry to enhance students’ writing craft.
  • Conventions. Through a study of conventions, students learn proper spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. Students engage in daily practice using Evan Moore Daily Language Review workbooks to reinforce skills.

With 45 minutes of lessons and practice each day, students engage in a focused lesson, guided practice, independent writing, and student reflection. During each writing class, teachers provide individualized instruction to all students. Our goal is for students to present their thoughts, feelings, and ideas meaningfully and clearly across genres. Students are expected to sustain their writing independently and actively for more time each year, eventually reaching 35 minutes by grade four.
