Science

At Harlem Academy, we believe that students’ exploration of their environment is critical to their holistic development, and every student has the opportunity to explore his or her interests within our science curriculum. We encourage students to ask questions and to develop their own theories to be tested. Students are encouraged to work with their peers, engaging in hands-on activities that allow them to learn through their own discoveries. Given the necessary materials, students explore the world at their fingertips and prepare for more advanced scientific inquiry in middle school.

Our daily sciences curriculum focuses on four disciplines: Earth and space science, life science, physical science, and technology. Students are engaged not only in learning science content but also in the critical development of inquiry, investigation, and analysis. The Full Options Science System (FOSS) program, an inquiry-based curriculum developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science and the University of California at Berkeley, provides the foundation for our study of science.
