As a volunteer with the second grade writing project, I get to spend time with some of the brightest and most imaginative students I’ve ever met.

In grade two, students apply reading techniques to longer texts, read multi-chapter books, and examine stories for the relationship between problem and solution. Throughout the year, we read books that connect to students’ experiences in the sciences as well as their personal interests. Picture books are an important literacy tool for reading aloud, reading instruction, reading fluency, and exploring nonfiction and fiction. During the year, we read chapter books as a class to establish students’ reading skills and develop the focus needed for longer books and books in a series. Students read series books, such as Horrible Harry in 2B and Dragon Slayer’s Academy: Cave of Doom. We also read the biography Shark Lady. Students build an understanding of character, plot, setting, dialogue, and information gathering.
