Grade Four

Students in grade four begin to differentiate their reading interests through genre studies, take ownership of personal reading goals, and focus on skills for comparing and contrasting different texts. Grade-four students make a transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Students use higher-order thinking skills to analyze literature, research topics, and learn challenging, analogy-based vocabulary. Students learn when to apply particular strategies and gain a sense of ownership for their reading comprehension. The Trophies program guides students as they acquire new reading skills, such as understanding main idea, recognizing cause and effect, drawing conclusions, synthesizing, analyzing, and making inferences. Novel studies are incorporated throughout the year. Our grade four reading list includes Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes; Bud, Not Buddy; The Indian in the Cupboard; and Where the Red Fern Grows. As grade-four students begin to stretch their minds, we remember that they are still children and share challenging but enjoyable read-alouds every week.
