Grade One

Mathematics begins with counting, exploring the number line, writing and comparing numbers, and learning about calendar, weather, and temperature routines. Students are then introduced to the number grid and its patterns, including how to count by 2s, 5s, 10s, evens, and odds. Later in the year, grade-one students learn how to add and subtract double-digit numbers, multiply, and divide. Number stories and word problems reinforce new concepts, such as measurement, place value, and time. Students practice basic skills through ongoing program routines and mathematical games.
