Health & Wellness

Harlem Academy's community faces critical health challenges. Among children in kindergarten through eighth grade in New York City, a shocking 26% of Hispanic children and 21% of black children are obese (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene). Compared to white adults nationwide, African Americans are twice as likely to die from diabetes and 30% more likely to die from heart disease. Meanwhile, Hispanic Americans are 50% more likely to die from diabetes (Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health).

Given the length of time students spend at Harlem Academy and its emphasis on holistic development, the school bears special responsibility for promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. Students go outside to nearby Central Park for both a recess and an athletics period and receive nutritious meals and snacks each day.
