Harlem Academy opened on September 13, 2004 in an administrative office provided by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and a classroom provided by the Children’s Arts Carnival, a community based arts organization.  Having outgrown that space, the school partnered with Boys and Girls Harbor and renovated a 2,850 square foot facility at 1330 Fifth Avenue (entrance on 111th Street) for the start of the 2005/06 school year. The space has four classrooms and a large common area, providing room for growth through the 2007/2008 school year.  The Board of Trustees and its Facilities Committee are currently exploring further expansion opportunities designed to give the school enough space to grow through the eighth grade

As Harlem Academy grows to a more efficient economy of scale, tuition contributions will account for a greater percentage of income, and spending will be reduced to approximately $14,000 per student (with an average of $3,500 per student coming from tuition revenue).  The unique model of small class size and an extended day program increases costs, but these increases are offset by streamlined administration and the leveraging of parents and other volunteers.  (See Appendix B: To-Date and Projected Operations Financial Plan)

Long-term Vision

The school’s leadership is focused on building an elementary and middle school program in Harlem that matches or exceeds the standards of any independent school in New York City.

Harlem Academy will continue adding one grade each year.  The first class of eighth grade students will graduate in 2012, prepared to succeed at top- independent day, independent boarding, and public secondary schools.

As the school completes the development of an outstanding program through the eighth grade, further expansion will include the addition of a kindergarten program and a second section of students at each grade level.  As part of this long-term maturation, the school will also build a permanent facility and an endowment to support student scholarships.
