Why Volunteer for HA?

Harlem Academy is a great place where the students have a bright future thanks to the work of the faculty, parents, and volunteers.  I hope you will contact the school to learn more about how you can get involved.

Besides helping in the classroom, I work with other volunteers to support the school’s fundraising efforts.  Some volunteers help plan events, but I work with Susan Johnson, the Development Director, to introduce and cultivate potential supporters.  I like introducing Harlem Academy to others because I know that anyone who makes it up for a tour will see what a difference this school is making.

My experience getting to know the second grade has been productive and rewarding.  Since I worked with the same class last year, it’s been exciting to see the students' growth in academics and in character.  I tutor in reading every Tuesday morning.  I am amazed by the teachers' commitment and am proud to be included in this wonderful learning process.

Field trips are an important component in the Harlem Academy curriculum.  I enjoyed helping organize and chaperone several trips including memorable visits to Rockefeller Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It’s great to come back weeks after a trip and hear the students still speaking about their experience.
