Why Support HA?

By Jane O'Connell, President, The Altman Foundation

Harlem Academy is an oasis in Harlem, a school that brings the strengths, discipline and rigor of an independent school to a community that does not have great access to excellence in education.  Vincent Dotoli, founder and Head of School, not only believes that the school can be the best in Harlem but also that Harlem Academy will achieve parity with the best of prestigious “downtown” schools.  Its formation was a bold and brave undertaking.

There is a joyful atmosphere at Harlem Academy, and the young students are actively engaged in the process of learning.  There are signs of creativity all over the small but wonderfully organized space.  The Head knows each child’s name and follows the students’ progress very closely. The economically and racially diverse student body reflects the neighborhood and the City. The relationship with the families as a co-partner in the education process is vital to its program.

The Altman Foundation seeks strong programs that open doors and bring opportunities to underserved communities in New York City.  We are proud to be among the school’s first funders.  The challenges going forward are great but possible because Harlem Academy is a wonderful place to go to school.
