Character Development
Harlem Academy students work and learn in a demanding yet supportive environment where positive contributions are celebrated and behaviors that detract from the learning environment are not tolerated.

All Harlem Academy students have jobs. Younger students take care of classroom materials and help with daily routines; older students maintain common areas, give tours, and assist with younger students. These ideals of service also extend  outside the classroom, culminating in an annual community service project for each class.

Every student participates in a weekly community meeting where teachers share character-developing lessons and provide public recognition for breakthroughs in personal growth, academic achievement, extra-curricular success, kindness, teamwork, and other positive contributions. In our School Thanksgiving, we ask for “a hope to be shared with all people” and work to instill this sense of hope in each of the students who attend our school.

Family members and friends are welcome to join us for our community meeting whenever possible. The meeting takes place each Thursday morning at 10:15 a.m. and is intentionally designed to be inclusive of people of all faiths or no formal faith background.

Harlem Academy's attentive staff and structured curriculum work in tandem to minimize discipline problems. However, when issues do arise, students are required to take responsibility for their behavior. Any student cited for discipline problems must write a brief reflection on his or her behavior and personal responsibility to classmates, school, and family.

At Harlem Academy, learning and character development go hand-in-hand. By cultivating attitudes that lead to long-term academic and personal growth, we put our students in a position to succeed at top secondary schools, in their communities, and in life.

"All I have to do is listen to my daughter speak about her teachers to know how much they care for not just her intellectual growth, but also her social and emotional growth."
