Mutual respect and support among attending families and Harlem Academy is a core element of our community. The school welcomes families as a critical decision-making constituency in the life and growth of the school. Over 90% of families are represented on one of four steering committees: Admissions, Hiring, Development, and Partnership. Each Harlem Academy family volunteers at the school four hours each month. Harlem Academy’s teachers and school administrators take an active role in communicating with families. Teachers share regular reports on student progress, written notice of classroom volunteer opportunities, and information about evening workshops. Formal conferences occur twice annually, and informal communication is part of the daily routine. Families sign an enrollment contract indicating their commitment not only to tuition contributions, but also to full participation in the life of the school. Family members are vital educational partners who oversee homework, organize supplemental learning activitites, and encourage the students to excel.
