Harlem Academy students consistently demonstrate an accelerated rate of learning and better performance than grade-level peers on a variety of nationally normalized measures.

1) In an area where only one in three public and charter school students performs at grade level by eighth grade, Harlem Academy’s students have raised their scores into the top 20% in the country (median score, June 2008 testing):

  • Reading Comprehension: above 78% of all students nationally
  • Writing Mechanics: above 81% of all students nationally
  • Mathematics: above 86% of all students nationally

2) On 2008/2009 Star Reading Assessment, Harlem Academy students have

  • Advanced 2.6 months in achievement for every 1 month of attendance.
  • Advanced to over one year above grade level by January recording period.

Harlem Academy also uses internal mechanisms to measure the effectiveness of various program elements.

1) Attendance for all students during the 2008/2009 School Year (through January 2009) is 97%.

2) Attendance at Fall Parent/Teacher conferences was 100%.

3) Using a range from 5 (outstanding) to 1 (not effective), attending families were anonymously surveyed (May 2007).  The school earned the following ratings:

  • Providing a rigorous and engaging academic program- 4.37
  • Communicating with your family regarding academic progress- 4.54
  • Providing for your child's social and emotional development- 4.40
  • Communicating with your family regarding social/emotional progress- 4.46
  • Providing productive family partnership programs- 4.43
  • Communicating with your family regarding family partnership programs and policies- 4.40
  • Use of our four committees: Admissions, Development, Hiring, Outreach- 4.49
  • Self-reflection on partnership with the school during the 2006/2007 School Year- 3.91
