Harlem Academy provides a unique environment where top academic performance is the norm rather than the exception. In 2010 standardized testing (ERB CTP4), the median Harlem Academy student performed at the 84th percentile nationally in English and math. Nearly two-thirds of students achieved at or above the 75th percentile, and one-quarter of students achieved at or above the 95th percentile.
Local public and charter school students are not meeting top performance standards, with only a small percentage of students scoring above proficient on the New York State Assessment. In fact, students are barely meeting minimum standards, with only 31% of students in local public schools passing English and 40% passing math. In contrast, more than 60% of Harlem Academy students score in the top quartile nationwide on annual ERB testing.
Harlem Academy prioritizes not just high academic achievement but also continued growth. New students often come from programs where their potential is not being realized; almost three-fourths of new students enter with scores that are below our school-wide averages. During their first year at the school, students average an 18-percentile point gain on nationally standardized tests.
